Dialog Medical has worked with the VA to update the iMedConsent™ application to be Section 508 compliant. In addition to several changes to existing screens, a new user interface has been created entitled "Section 508 Mode", designed specifically to be used with a screen reader to generate procedure consents and documents in iMedConsent™. The goal of this feature is to navigate within iMedConsent using the keyboard (tab, arrow, and enter keys). It is strongly encouraged for iMedConsent™ administrators to run iMedConsent™ in the default mode in comparison to the Section 508 mode to note how the changes have been addressed for Section 508 compliance.

Navigating iMedconsent™ Section 508 Mode

1. Enabling Section 508 Mode of iMedConsent – Once iMedConsent is up and running, select Alt M (Maintenance Menu). Arrow down or select Shift P (Preferences). Under preferences, select Section 508 mode.

2. Navigating the Main User Interface of Section 508 Mode of iMedConsent™

Below is the tab order for the Main User Interface of Section 508 Mode of iMedConsent.

  • Search Function - This allows keyword searches in the library.
  • Go Button - Selecting this launches Search.
  • All Documents -This indicates all the specialties that are viewable in the iMedConsent™ library. Tabbing to All Documents refreshes the screen.
    • The down arrow key goes to All Documents to Sign and Documents to Sign.
    • Subsequent presses of the down arrow key goes to Favorites, Gallery, and Packages.
  • English Radio Button - Selecting the down arrow key goes to the Include Spanish radio button.
  • Specialties Section of iMedConsent™. Arrowing down goes to the folders within each specialty. These folders typically include:
    • Consents - Basic
    • Consents - Step by Step
    • Drug Information
    • Education Easy Reading
    • Education Standard
    • Pictures and Diagrams
    • Tests and Admissions

Arrow keys navigate from folder to folder. To get to the documents within a folder, select the tab key. Afterwards, use the arrow keys to find a specific document.

To create a consent form for a particular document, select the Enter key to launch the consent wizard.

To create a consent with more than one document, select the Spacebar key after each selected document. After choosing the procedures, the Enter key will launch the consent wizard, otherwise continue tabbing down.

  • The next tab is where the consent documents are collected to create the consent form. This can contain more than one document.
  • The next tab is a button labeled Begin Consent that launches the consent wizard.
  • The next tab is a button labeled Clear Selection which clears a procedure selection.
  • The next tab is a button labeled Clear All Selections which is used for clearing all procedure selections.
  • The last tab on the main user interface is a button labeled Patient Info. Selecting this launches a window to read information on the patient selected. Selecting the OK, exits the window.

Tip: Within the specialty list, typing the first letter of a specialty (for example, “G”, for General Surgery) the cursor goes to the first specialty that begins with that letter.

3. Generating a Consent Form (Basic Method) Within the informed consent wizard, navigation is done using the tab and arrow keys. Navigating from screen to screen by using the Next, Back, and Cancel button at the bottom of every screen.

  • Patient Verification and Decision-Making Capacity

This is the first screen of the informed consent wizard. Please note that the first tab on every screen in the informed consent wizard starts with the Help feature. Alt P goes to the Policy feature. Unless needed, it is recommended to tab through this.

The only required entry on the screen is Patient Decision Making Capacity question. The tab will navigate to a “Yes” radio button for this response. The down arrow selects the “No” radio button and navigates to the assessment and surrogate identification screens.

  • Condition or Diagnosis

Required entry on the screen only occurs when there is more than one item that may be selected in the diagnosis list. Tabbing on this screen reads the label to select the appropriate diagnosis. Use the space bar to select or deselect items. Use the arrow keys to go from value to value.
